US Two Prong Elbow Power Cord Introduction
Here is an introduction to US 2-prong elbow power cords:
A 2-prong elbow power cord is a type of AC power cord commonly used in the United States and Canada to connect electrical appliances to non-grounded electrical outlets.
Most residential power outlets in North America are of the ungrounded NEMA 1-15 type, featuring two flat parallel blades spaced 1.905 inches apart. Appliances designed for these outlets require a 2-prong plug.
A standard straight 2-prong plug can be inconvenient for appliances, as the plug hangs down below the device. An “elbow” plug solves this problem by bending the plug at a 90 degree angle to the cable.
This elbow shape allows the plug to stick straight out from the appliance for easy insertion into an outlet, without dangling. It provides a cleaner, neater installation.
The cord itself contains two insulated copper conductors for live and neutral power. It does not include an equipment grounding conductor as the outlets are ungrounded.
The conductors are usually 18 AWG stranded wire for flexibility and durability inside appliances. Insulation and a protective jacket withstand higher temperatures.
By molding the plug directly to the cable end, an integrated plug-cord assembly is created. This eliminates loose connections and provides a durable single-piece design.
As such, 2-prong elbow power cords safely and conveniently deliver power to a wide range of electrical appliances used with standard NEMA 1-15 outlets in North America.

Frequently Asked Questions
US Two Prong Elbow Power Cord
What amperage rating do they have?
+
–
Most 2 prong elbow power cords are rated for 15 amps, which is the standard for NEMA 1-15 plugs. However, higher amperage rated cords of 20 amps, 30 amps and even 50 amps are also available for higher power applications.
What voltage do they operate at?
+
–
2 prong elbow power cords are designed for use with 120 volt AC power sources, which is the standard residential voltage in North America. Some cords may also be rated for 240 volt AC.
Are they polarized or non-polarized?
+
–
2 prong elbow power cords are non-polarized, meaning the two flat blades are identical and can be inserted either way into the outlet. This is because they are for use with non-grounded outlets that are not polarized.
What type of insulation is used?
+
–
The insulation used in 2 prong elbow power cords is typically vinyl or rubber, in order to withstand the higher temperatures that can occur inside electrical appliances. The insulation also needs to be abrasion resistant and flexible.
What materials are the blades made of?
+
–
The blades (prongs) of the plug are typically made of brass for good conductivity and corrosion resistance. They are often plated with nickel for a shiny finish and longer life.
