FAQs
What is the difference between SATA & PATA?
SATA (Serial ATA) and PATA (Parallel ATA) are interfaces primarily used to link to mass storage components e.g. hard drives and optical drives. SATA is the more recent interface and the successor of PATA and commonly used in all computers. The key advantages of the SATA interface include; increased data transfer rate, easy cable management and better cable length, increased airflow due to its smaller size and lastly, support more drives.
Supporting hot-swapping, fast data transfer, and high operational efficiency, hard drives using the SATA (Serial ATA) interface are referred to as serial interface hard drives, representing the trend of future PC storage. Serial ATA utilizes a serial connection method and incorporates embedded clock signals in its serial ATA bus, which enhances error correction capabilities significantly. One of its major differences compared to the past lies in its ability to verify transmission commands (not just data); if errors are detected, automatic correction occurs, greatly enhancing data transmission reliability. The serial interface also boasts simple structure and supports hot-swapping.
Serial interface hard drives, known for their serial data transmission, represent a completely different hard drive interface type from parallel ATA. In comparison to parallel ATA, they offer numerous advantages. Firstly, Serial ATA transmits data in a continuous serial manner, sending only 1 bit of data at a time. This reduces the number of pins on the SATA interface, resulting in fewer connecting cables and increased efficiency. In practice, Serial ATA accomplishes all tasks using just four pins: for cable connection, ground connection, data transmission, and data reception. Additionally, this architecture reduces system power consumption and complexity. Secondly, Serial ATA has a higher starting point and greater development potential. Serial ATA 1.0 defines a data transfer rate of up to 150MB/s, surpassing the highest data transfer rate of the fastest parallel ATA (ATA/133) at 133MB/s. With Serial ATA 2.0, the data transfer rate reaches 300MB/s, ultimately aiming for a maximum data transfer rate of 600MB/s.
The physical design of SATA is derived from Fibre Channel, utilizing a four-core wiring system. The required voltage is significantly reduced to 250mV (maximum 500mV), which is 20 times less than the traditional parallel ATA interface’s 5V! Hence, manufacturers can integrate advanced features into Serial ATA hard drives, such as Hot Swapping. More importantly, in terms of connection, besides the traditional Point-to-Point connection, SATA also supports a “star” connection, providing convenience for advanced applications like RAID. In practical use, SATA’s Host Bus Adapter (HBA) functions akin to a switch on a network, allowing individual communication with each hard drive via a dedicated channel. Therefore, it eliminates the master/slave control issue present in parallel ATA.
